William Hobson joined the British naval service and commanded the frigate ‘Rattlesnake’ which sailed for the East Indies in 1835, and onward to Australia and New Zealand where Hobson’s leadership qualities and knowledge of the area obtained him an appointment as governor. The Waterford born man was highly influential in the passing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
