PATRIOT, RADICAL & POET

A gynecologist, William Drennan was one of the first medical practitioners to advocate for inoculation against smallpox and was also a cofounder of the Society of United Irishmen. He is also famous for his poem, ‘When Erin first Rose’ which contained the first reference to Ireland’s universally known title, ‘The Emerald Isle’.
