Stephen C. Rowan

US NAVY

Stephen Clegg Rowan was a midshipman in the US Navy who served during the capture of Monterey in July, 1846 as well as in the occupation of both San Diego and Los Angeles. Promoted to captain, he commanded the New Ironsides on blockade duty off Charleston, South Carolina following which he was commissioned rear admiral on July 25th, 1866, serving as commander of the Norfolk navy yard until 1867. He was appointed a vice-admiral in August, 1870 and died in Washington DC on March 31st, 1890.
