Tom Barry

IRISH GUERRILLA LEADER

Tom Barry fought in the War of Independence (1919 – 1921) and his involvement with the West Cork Brigade gained him a reputation as a brilliant field commander. On November 28th, 1920, he ambushed and killed almost a complete platoon of British auxiliaries at Kilmichael and so efficient was the brigade that the British army responded by stationing around 12,500 troops in County Cork during the conflict, completely outnumbering Barry’s unit which never exceeded three hundred men.
