Thomas Heazle Parke joined Welsh explorer Henry Morton Stanley in the relief of Emin Pasha, Governor of Equatoria after which he received numerous honours from the army and was awarded gold medals from the British Medical Association and the Royal Geographical Society of London. A statue to his memory stands on the lawn of Leinster House, home of the Irish Parliament, Dublin.
