A founder member of the Young Ireland Group, it was a fiery speech by Thomas Francis Meagher, in support of armed insurrection as the only means of obtaining Irish independence that earned him the title ‘Meagher of the Sword’. Following the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848, Meagher was captured and sent to Van Dieman’s Land in 1849. He later escaped and took part in the the American Civil War where he became a brigadier-general and later, governor for the territory of Montana.
