Thomas Crean

ANTARCTIC EXPLORER & ALBERT MEDAL RECIPIENT

Having joined the Royal Navy when he was just fifteen years of age, Tom Crean took part in three major Antarctic expeditions, being awarded the Albert Medal, the highest civilian award for gallantry, for the great bravery he displayed whilst serving. Crean also embarked on an expedition with the great Ernest Shackleton and endured unimaginably treacherous conditions on several occasions having been forced to abandon the ship ‘Endurance’ in the Weddell Sea in October, 1915. He later returned to his home in Kerry, where he opened a pub called ‘The South Pole Inn’.
