St Oliver Plunkett

ROMAN CATH. ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH

Oliver Plunkett entered the Irish college in Rome, Italy where he was ordained in 1654, but chose not return to Ireland until 1669 due to the Cromwellian execution of Roman Catholic clergy. Later appointed archbishop of Armagh, it was his opposition to various civil disabilities imposed on Roman Catholics that brought him into conflict with the authorities and he was later found guilty of treason and promoting the Roman Catholic faith before being hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, the last Roman Catholic martyr to die in England. He was adopted as the patron saint for peace and reconciliation in Ireland in 1997.
