During World War I, Gordon Morgan Holmes served as a consultant neurologist to the British Army in France where he was highly influential in the management of shellshock cases. He, more than any other individual, was responsible for the form of neurological examination as it is now performed and following the war he became the leading neurologist at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases.
