Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness

BREWER

Upon the death of his father, Arthur, Benjamin Lee Guinness became the sole owner of Guinness breweries and was thus responsible for extending the home market. He successfully built a large export trade but also diversified himself, becoming the first Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1851. In 1860 Guinness undertook, at his own expense, the restoration of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, and personally supervised the work, which cost in the region of £150,000.
