IRISH DIPLOMAT

Seán Lester joined the Gaelic League and was adopted into the cause of Irish nationalism before enlisting with Irish Republican Brotherhood. In 1929 he was appointed to represent Ireland in the League of Nations, a role in which he continuously protested against the German government’s persecution of the Jews. Lester was appointed secretary general of the League in 1940, and oversaw its closure in 1946, when he transferred to the United Nations.
