In 1853 Robert O’Hara Burke emigrated to Australia where he was appointed by the Victorian government to explore a proposed overland telegraph route from the city of Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north. The journey was a nightmare of constant rain and dwindling rations and the brave Burke died en route.
