Robert Mallet built the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, Mizen Head, County Cork, which is the most south-westerly point of Ireland, and was also involved in the construction of the roof to St. George’s Church, Dublin, which weighed 133 tons. In 1846, he wrote an important thesis on the dynamics of earthquakes, for which he carried out blasting experiments to determine the speed of seismic propagation in sand and solid rock and in 1859 he was awarded the Telford Medal by the Institute of Civil Engineers.
