Well known for his love of animals, politician Richard Martin had the first act for the protection of animals passed in Great Britain in 1822 and he was a co-founder of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in 1824. Dubbed ‘Humanity Dick’ by George IV who was a personal friend, Martin died in France on January 6th, 1834.
