Arriving in France in 1740, Richard Hennessy became an officer in Dillon’s regiment and fought at Fontenoy in 1745. When he retired from military service, he started a trading business in Cognac, France, on lands which were given to him for services to King Louis XV. There he established a distillery, which produces the world famous Hennessy brandy to this day.
