SOLDIER & STATESMAN

Pierce Butler commenced his army career in the 22nd Regiment of Foot of the British Army and traveled to the United States with the regiment in 1758 to participate in the French and Indian War. When war broke out between Britain and the Colonies in 1775, Butler defected to the American cause, joining the South Carolina militia to fight against the British forces. Being a former British officer, he became a primary target of British aggression throughout the campaign, but successfully evaded capture.
