Philip Sheridan

GENERAL, AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

A brilliant general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, Phillip Sheridan led one of the most admirable military careers in US history. He fought in the Indian Wars and was promoted from captain to colonel to brigadier-general in quick succession.  Promoted to commander of cavalry in the Army of the Potomac by General US Grant, Sheridan defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and the following year pursued General Robert E. Lee, forcing his surrender at Appomattox.
