OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL WINNER

Peter O’Connor was an accomplished athlete who was a prolific exponent of the long jump, high jump and triple jump events. Invited to represent Britain in the Olympic Games in 1900, he refused on the grounds that he wished only to represent the country of his birth and at the 1906 Olympic Games, he scaled the mast in the middle of the arena and replaced the Union Jack with an Irish flag. Two days later, he went on to win the gold medal in the triple jump.
