Peter Campbell

FOUNDER OF THE URUGUAYAN NAVY

Having fought for the 71st Highland Regiment of the British Army in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1806, Peter Campbell remained in that country and rose to prominence under liberator, José Artigas. In 1818 Campbell assembled a squadron of river vessels to support Artigas and in August of that year he was appointed first naval commander of the Patriot fleet. In achieving this, he is thus acknowledged as the founder of the Uruguayan navy.
