Oscar Wilde

PLAYWRIGHT, NOVELIST & POET

The purveyor of many a humorous quote, Oscar Wilde was witty conversationalist whose literary career took off when he published ‘The Happy Prince and Other Tales’ in 1888. His first comedy play, ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’ (1892), was an instant hit and was followed by three more comedies, ‘A Woman of No Importance’ (1893) ‘An Ideal Husband’ (1895) and ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’ (1895). In 1891 Wilde had a relationship with Lord Alfred which led to his imprisonment in Reading jail. He died in Paris, France on November 30th, 1900 but his legacy lives on and many of his legendary quotes have provoked both humour and inward reflection in equal measure.
