SURGEON, ECCENTRIC & WRITER

Physician Oliver St. John Gogarty took part on the side of the Free State in the civil war and was captured during that conflict before escaping by swimming across the River Liffey. He also published poems and novels as well as a number of volumes of his reminiscences, amongst which were, ‘As I was going down Sackville Street’. Referred to by W.B Yates as ‘The Arch Poet’, Gogarty, has a public house named after him in Dublin’s Temple Bar area.
