Noel Browne was a controversial public representative who served as a TD for five different political parties. As minister for health from 1948 to 1951, he instigated a programme for the eradication of tubercolosis in Ireland and later, his proposed ‘Mother and Child’ scheme brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church. Browne also introduced the first Family Planning Bill.
