SOUTH AFRICAN TRADE UNIONIST

Trade unionist Mary Fitzgerald was prominent in South Africa where she became a typist for the Mine Workers Union. Recognising the terrible conditions under which the miners worked, it was during a strike that she led in 1911 that she earned the title, ‘Pickhandle Mary’.
