‘The General’ Martin Cahill was born on Dublin’s north side and was responsible for the theft of gold, diamonds and valuable art worth millions of pounds during his criminal career. Displaying a number of unusual character traits, he was renowned for wearing comical character outfits during his numerous appearances in court and he always endeavoured to keep one hand over part of his face in an effort to conceal his identity. A movie based on his life named ‘The General’ was released in 1998.
