Margaret Haughery

?THE MOTHER OF ORPHANS?

Known as ‘the mother of the orphans’ in New Orleans, orphan Margaret Haughery experienced tragedy in her life with the death of her husband and an infant child. Following her difficult loss, she commenced a legendary career of charitable deeds, nursing the sick and dying, regardless of race or creed, during the New Orleans yellow fever epidemic. The people of that city held Haughery in great reverence and following her death in 1882, the city erected a public monument to her memory.
