Maj Gen Patrick Ronayne Cleburne

CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY

Patrick Cleburne served as a brigadier-general in the Union Army in the Battles of Shiloh and Richmond (Kentucky), and during the campaign of 1863, successfully held off a much larger union force with his division, saving the army of Tennessee from complete devastation in the process. In 1864 Cleburne recognised that the South was losing the war and he called upon the leadership of the army of Tennessee to emancipate slaves and to forgo their enlistment into the Confederate army. The proposal was met with extreme hostility and was suppressed on the order of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Cleburne lost his life during an ill-conceived assault, which he had been opposed to, at the Battle of Franklin, south of Nashville on November 30th, 1864.
