Kate Shelley

RAILWAY HEROINE & SCHOOL TEACHER

It was during a fierce storm in Moingona, Iowa that Kate Shelley performed an extraordinary deed of bravery. Realising that one of two bridges over the Des Moines River had collapsed in the storm, and with only a lantern to guide her in the darkness, she successfully warned and stopped the midnight express train which was bound for Chicago, Illinois. In doing so, Shelley saved the lives of around two hundred people and for her actions she was granted a scholarship to Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa where she eventually graduated as a teacher.
