John Robert Godley

FDR. CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND

John Robert Godley was appointed high sheriff of County Leitrim in 1843 and in 1849 he travelled to New Zealand as the representative of the Canterbury Association which was formed to establish an Anglican Church settlement at Christchurch. He died in 1861 and the people of Christchurch erected a statue in his honour in Cathedral Square that year.
