GEN. IN THE CHILEAN WAR OF INDEP.

John MacKenna studied military engineering in Barcelona before entering the Spanish military as a cadet in the Regiment Irlanda. He later left Spain for Chile where he was appointed governor of Osorno by fellow Irishman Ambrose O’Higgins and joined the rebel forces of his son, Bernardo O Higgins. At the Battle of Membrillar, MacKenna defeated a much superior Spanish force in a victory which brought an end to Spanish rule in Chile.
