BUSINESSMAN & TEXAS FREEDOM FIGHTER

Having emigrated to the United States following the 1798 rebellion, John Joseph Linn eventually settled in New Orleans, later moving onto Victoria, Texas, where he established a business. He became quartermaster of the Texas army in 1835, and was heavily involved in Texas’ fight for freedom from Mexico. The following year, he was elected to the convention which declared the independence of Texas from Mexico and in 1839, he began a term as mayor of Victoria.
