PREMIER OF NEW ZEALAND

In 1866 John Ballance emigrated to New Zealand where he became a journalist and editor, founding the Wanganui Herald newspaper. A veteran of the Māori Wars, in 1875 he entered parliament with his political career eventually leading him to the office of premier of New Zealand in 1891.
