IRISH NATIONALIST

Revolutionary James Stephens took part in the abortive rising of 1848 following which he escaped to France. Having returned to Ireland in 1856, he founded the Irish Republican Brotherhood and planned another rising before fleeing to the United States. He later returned to France where he spent a number of years as a journalist and teacher.
