James Hoban

ARCHITECT OF THE WHITE HOUSE

James Hoban commenced his working life as a carpenter before studying architecture at the Royal Dublin Society and emigrating to the United States where he established himself as an architect. There he won a competition for the design of the president’s residence which was later to be called ‘The White House’, the design of which bore striking similarities to Leinster House in Dublin. Hoban supervised the White House’s construction during which the corner stone was layed by President George Washington on September 13th, 1793.
