James Connolly

IRISH SOCIALIST

Edinburgh born James Connolly was a cofounder the Irish Labour Party. Commander of the republican forces in Dublin during the Easter Rising of 1916, he was one of the seven signatories to the Proclamation of Irish Independence and was severely wounded in the General Post Office during the rising before being court-martialed and executed. The circumstances of this execution enraged the Irish public and in death, Connolly and the other rebels, succeeded in turning Irish support for the union with Britain in the opposite direction.
