James "Miranda"Barry

MILITARY SURGEON

James “Miranda” Barry was a regimental surgeon in the British army and was sent to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa where against severe opposition, he organised medical services and also carried out the first caesarean operation on the continent of Africa. Barry also served in Jamaica and later became principle medical officer to Malta as well inspector general of hospitals in Canada. Throughout his life, people remarked on his feminine appearance and it was upon his death, in London in 1865, that it was discovered that not only did “he” have the body of a female, but had also given birth to at least one child.
