Jack Kelly

WORLD BOXING CHAMPION

A sufferer of tuberculosis, Jack Kelly was undisputed middleweight boxing champion of the world. In 1891 he faced the great Bob Fitzsimons and was completely dominated in the fight. Only Kelly’s second Jack McAuliffe knew that Dempsey had contracted tuberculosis and badly needing to support himself and his family, he placed a bet on Dempsey’s behalf laying $1,400 to win $1,000, that Dempsey would last ten rounds. Upon reaching the tenth round, McAuliffe wanted to throw in the towel but Dempsey refused to let him. He finally did so in the thirteenth round.
