Hugh O'Neill

IRISH REBEL LEADER

The second Earl of Tyrone Hugh O'Neill is best known for leading the resistance during the Nine Years War, the strongest threat to English authority in Ireland since the revolt of Silken Thomas. Widely regarded as the king of Ireland, his eventual defeat lead to the ‘Flight of the Earls’, which saw O’Neill, Rory O’Donnell and many followers leave for continental Europe. It represented the demise of the great Irish chieftains following which the plantation of Ulster took place.
