Following the outbreak of the United Irish rebellion in 1798, Henry Joy McCracken was appointed general for Antrim and formulated a plan to seize various towns throughout the county. His efforts met with initial success but he ultimately failed in the attack on Antrim town before being court-martialed and hung in Belfast on June 17th, 1798.
