Henry Grattan

ORATOR & PATRIOT

In 1775 Henry Grattan was elected to the Irish Parliament where he became the spokesman for the patriots within that establishment. His first political success was the repeal of restrictions on Irish trade, where Irish exports to the American Colonies had previously been prohibited, and he followed this with a campaign for legislative independence for Ireland. Through the efforts of Grattan, Britain passed the Repeal of the Declaratory Act, thus giving the Irish parliament full legislative power with the king retaining the power of veto.
