Francis O’Neill was born near Bantry and became a cabin boy on an English merchant ship at the age of sixteen. Eventually settling in Chicago, he joined that city’s police force in 1873 and rose through the ranks to eventually become chief of police from 1901 until 1905. A great lover of traditional Irish music, O’Neill collected tunes from a wide variety of sources and following his retirement, concentrated his energies on publishing his collection.
