INVENTOR

In 1816 Nicholas Callan enrolled at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where he developed an interest in electricity and magnetism. He was later appointed to the chair of natural philosophy, establishing a scientific laboratory in the basement of the college, and in that laboratory, he made a major break-through with the invention of the induction coil which served as the forerunner of today’s transformers.
