THE PIMPERNEL OF THE VATICAN

Ordained in Rome in 1922, Hugh O’Flaherty is accredited with saving the lives of 6,500 allied prisoners of war from the Germans in Rome from 1943 to 1944. Having organised an escape for the prisoners, he gained the title ‘The Pimpernel of the Vatican’ and his World War II heroism was officially honoured by the governments of Britain, France, Italy and the United States.
