Having married Francisco Solano López, son of the president of Paraguay, Eliza Lynch became the most powerful woman in Paraguay when her husband became president in 1862. The de facto first lady, she supported him through the disastrous War of Triple Alliance and was expelled from the country. Following her death, she was proclaimed a national heroine.
