Initially publishing children’s books, author Eilís Dillon later commenced writing novels and detective stories all of which won her great critical acclaim and a wide readership. Her historical novel about the road to Irish independence, called, ‘Across the Bitter Sea’, was published in 1973 and she won the Bisto Book of the Year award in 1991 with ‘The Island of Ghosts’.
