Edward Marcus Despard

REVOLUTIONARY

Having been dismissed from the British navy, Edward Michael Despard became a guiding spirit in the campaign to assist the United Irishmen in their struggle for independence. In 1802 he was named as a member of a conspiracy to seize the Tower of London and the Bank of England, and to assassinate King George III. Despite flimsy evidence, Despard was found guilty and sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered, the last of such sentences to be carried out in England. The twenty thousand people who attended his execution remained silent throughout as a mark of respect.
