LAWYER & POLITICAL LEADER

A passionate unionist, when the Home Rule Bill for Ireland was introduced in 1912, Edward Carson took a leading part in the formation of Ulster unionism in openly defying it. He was leader of the Irish Unionist Alliance and Ulster Unionist Party between 1910 and 1921 and also held numerous positions in the cabinet of the United Kingdom. Upon his death, Carson was one of the few non-monarchs to receive a United Kingdom state funeral.
