Having joined the Merchant Navy, Ernest Shackleton was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve where he was part of the National Antarctic Expedition under Robert Falcon Scott on board the ship ‘Discovery’ in 1901. In 1907, he organised and led the ‘British Antarctic Expedition’ on board the ‘Nimrod’ and for his exertions, was knighted upon his return to England. Shackleton’s most famous expedition was on board the ship ‘Endurance’ which set out from London on August 1st, 1914, eventually being crushed in the Weddell Sea before finally sinking on November 21st, 1915. An epic journey saw him survive those treacherous conditions and he would set out on yet another Antarctic journey before his death in 1922.
