Éamon de Valera was born in the United States of America and came to Ireland with his mother at two years of age. During the Easter Rising on April 24th, 1916, he was in charge of the unit that occupied Boland’s Mills, Grand Canal Street, Dublin, but was eventually captured. Later refusing to accept the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, following the Irish Civil War, de Valera founded the Fianna Fáil political party and in 1932, established the Irish Free State government before becoming the first Taoiseach under the new Irish constitution in 1937.
