Donald Edward Garland served as a flying officer in the 12th Squadron of the Royal Air Force during World War II. On May 12th, 1940, five British bombers were dispatched to demolish a strategically vital bridge over the Albert Canal, Belgium. They succeeded in accomplishing their mission, which was attributed Garland’s coolness who was lost in the attack and subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross.
