Daniel O'Connell

THE LIBERATOR

Known as “The Liberator”, Daniel O’Connell was a man of peace who did not take part in the rebellion of 1798, preferring instead to assert himself by political means. He is known for his vigorous campaigning for Catholic emancipation and the repeal of the Union between Ireland and Great Britain and became the first Roman Catholic Lord Mayor of Dublin, whose principal street is named in his honour. A magnificent monument to his memory stands at its entrance.
